My sabbatical map is full of bright red pins, some marking places I’ve always wanted to explore and others marking recent suggestions that proved too interesting to not include. Destinations to explore, cultures to learn, differences to relish, and similarities to provide familiarity – it’s all out there, waiting for me and my BMW.

- The Ace Cafe, London (yes, I’ve been there before, but it’s a proper launching-off spot)
- Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock, Norway)
- Atlantic Road (also in Norway)
- Kaliningrad (the Russian exclave sandwiched between Poland and Lithuania)
- Poland (where my mom’s side of the family is from), but especially Auschwitz
- Sedlec Ossuary (outside of Prague)
- Cicmany, Slovakia
- Santiago de Compostela (Spain)
- The Dordogne (France)
- Quinag and the Isle of Skye (Scotland)
